The Little Yellow Train

The Little Yellow Train runs all the year round and provides an excellent way of visiting towns such as Font Romeu if you wish to avoid the alternative of the twisting road route. It is rated as a Unesco heritage site and the only railway higher than this in daily use is the Darjeeling-Himalaya.

Font Romeu

Font Romeu lies in the Pyrenees between 75 and 90 minutes drive from Perpignan. It’s one of several high mountain resorts close to Perpignan with an exceptionally sunny climate and low humidity. In winter the resort has a huge ski area and between May and December, Font Romeu is a wonderful base for exploring the surrounding mountains.

Collioure, known as the “City of Painters” as the Fauvism movement was born here. Matisse, Derain, Dufy, Chagall, Picasso and others immortalized this idyllic fishing village in their works. On the rocky coastline, it is situated about 25 minutes drive from Perpignan. The picturesque village is nestled in an authentic environment – its small Catalan harbor is sheltered by a quiet bay where the chain of the Pyrenees meets the Mediterranean Sea. Have a swim at the Collioure beach and enjoy a seafood lunch after shopping at the charming art boutiques.

This breathtaking village in the Pyrénées is around 25 minutes drive from Perpignan. The castle, which stands above the village and dates from the period 988-990, used to serve as a military centre and a chief town of the viscountcy of Vallespir. It represents one of the best examples of a medieval fortress left in Roussillon. During summer you can eat outside on restaurants’ terraces, enjoying a stunning view of the surrounding countryside.

Barcelona lies around 80 minute by the TGV train from Perpignan. Arriving in Barcelona you will find a confident, avant garde city, looking towards the rest of Europe for its inspiration and its innovations and inspiring the rest of the world in return. Gaudi architectural treasures, museums, the stunning Passeig de Gracia with its famous shopping and endless tapas bars and restaurants with amazing avant-garde cuisine will all provide you with unforgettable impressions.

Céret is a superb market town nestling in the Pyrenees 30 kms from Perpignan and 12 kms from the Spanish border. Visit the bustling, rustic Saturday morning market or wander down the medieval cobbled streets to the Museum of Modern Art, stopping along the way to take in a coffee at one of the many quaint bars.

Carcassonne is a magnificent fortified castle and town. It owes its division into two separate “towns” -the Cité and the Ville Basse to the wars against the Cathars. From a distance it’s the epitome of the fairy-tale medieval town. It was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1997, and is only a 90 minute drive from Chateau La Tour Apollinaire.

Figueres is situated about 60 km drive from Perpignan and is famous for the best Salvador Dali museum in the world. One either loves or hates Dali but he never leaves you indifferent. If you are as passionate about Dali as we are at Chateau La Tour Apollinaire, you should also try to visit his house at Port Lligat and Gala’s chateau at Pubol.
